U-16 Division 1 League BBSE 1-6 Faughs 0-5   7th April ‘18

The recent monsoon-like conditions meant that we moved our “home” U-16 league match on Saturday to the unfamiliar surroundings of the Civil Service grounds in Islandbridge, where the pitch was in excellent condition.

With one win under their belt already in the league against the Naomh Fionnbarra, the girls were hoping to build on this, but knew Faughs would present a much sterner test, and Faughs did not disappoint.

Faughs began like an express train and in truth our girls were struggling in the early stages to get to the pace of the game, Faughs were hunting in packs and picking up most breaks, and the ball rarely left the Boden half during this period.

After 20 minutes Faughs led by 4 points, and we had yet to score. It could have been worse, but our backs were performing heroically – in particular stellar performances from our two corner backs Alana and Stephanie, and a commanding display from Niamh at centre back. In addition, Sarah was sound in goal, launching many an attack with her long accurate deliveries.

Katie finally got Boden on the score sheet with a fine point after collecting a great cross-field pass from Julie. Katie then converted a free and we were very unlucky when a great 1-2 between Erin and Ciara Kelleher ended with Erin hitting the wrong side of the butt of the post.

That left us 2 points adrift at half time, and the girls resolved to up the performance in the second half. They were true to their word.

Kiara (just coming back from injury) led by example, Yvonne moved out to the half line and gave an exhibition, while Anna and Lucy cleaned up around the middle. Up front, Holly did a great marking on their playmaker.

Sorcha, Anna Fitzgerald, Ciara Doyle and Kate all came in and each contributed handsomely to the overall team effort.

The second half opened with Katie slotting over a free. Then a great delivery from Anna O’Shea found Sarah lurking at the end of it on the edge of the square, and she deflected it to the net for the decisive score of the game which put us 2 up.

The girls continued to press and finished with 3 points from Ciara Doyle, Mia and Holly. The final point from Faughs in injury time proved to be no more than consolation.

This was essentially a great and committed team performance, and sets us up nicely for upcoming matches. Next up is Crokes away in 2 weeks.

Our 3 teams played out in Skerries against St Finians & Skerries Harps. After the short 5 hour trip, all the girls astonishingly arrived on time. Each team played 3 matches. They displayed great teamwork interlinking for some very well worked scores, all the skills were executed extremely well from stick & hand passing, free taking, tackling & soloing etc their work rate & effort in each match was in a word “exceptional”.
