Ballyboden St Endas v O’Dwyers, Sunday 3rd October 2021, Pairc Uí Mhúrchú at 3pm
The Ladies B football team came from 4 points down in the closing minutes of their Junior A Championship game in Pairc Ui Mhurchu to gain a dramatic victory over O’Dwyers on Sunday on a scoreline of 1:11 to 1:10. Ballyboden won the toss, playing with the wind they started brightly and had early points from Orlaith Keane, Chloe Murphy and Áine Duffy. Further scores from Megan Conway, Aoibhinn Joyce and Rachel Basquel left the half time score at 0:06 to 0:03 in favour of Boden. The Boden mentors of Duffy, Manning and Walsh were concerned that the 3 point margin would not be sufficient against the wind in the 2nd half and those fears were realised when O’Dwyers tagged on several points and then found the Boden net after excellent combination play.
With their backs to the wall, the Boden girls dug deep and showed tremendous spirit and no little skill to stay in the game, defending strongly to avoid conceding further scores and keep the scoreboard ticking over at the other end. Rachel Basquel who was having a fine game in the unfamiliar role of wing forward got the score of the game with an excellent point from distance with her left. Shortly after that Rachel was unlucky to be sin-binned for “tackling robustly” according to the referee leaving us to play out the closing stages with 14 players. Goals win games and the Boden goal was scored in the closing minutes by Aoibhinn after great play from our midfielders Katie and Maeve. Rebecca then grabbed what proved to be the decisive score in the closing minutes when she fired over from close range.
This was an excellent team performance with all 15 starting players and subs playing their part in the victory. All 6 defenders played worked their socks off but special mention here to minor player Katie McCabe who defended brilliantly but was always an option for Danielle’s kick-outs and helping to set up Boden attacks. Our midfield of Maeve Leamy and our minor player Katie Quinlivan worked tirelessly up and down the field all day. All the forwards contributed to a great win but Aoibhinn apart from scoring 1:02 led the attack and helped create many scores for her teammates.
