The Annual Poc Fada took place on Saturday last in Cherryfield over a specially designed course. 16 teams took part, with each team taking an average time of about 50 minutes to complete the course. The teams were made up of a Senior Hurler, a Junior or Intermediate and a Minor. Players took their shots in strict rotation and strategy proved essential in getting around the course in the fewest shots. Each team was also accompanied by a referee whose job it was to ensure rules were adhered to, apply penalties where necessary and to count the shots taken. Feed back suggested the course was just about right.
Conor O’ Donoghue, Eoin Mac Phaidín and Johnny Corr dovetailed well to get around the course without getting into too much trouble and proved worthy winners. Having two goalkeepers on a team would suggest length of shots and accuracy are a good combination in this event. Congratulations to the winning team and thanks to their referee, Tomás Ó Riordáin.
Sincere thanks to our Sponsor, Storyhouse. Donal Ashe was on hand in the clubhouse later that evening to present the winners with their trophies. The Adult Hurling Section is indebted to them for their continued sponsorship of the Poc Fada and we wish them every success. Pictured are Donal Ashe (Storyhouse), Tomás Ó Riordáin (Referee) , Conor O’ Donoghue, John Corr (Minor Manager) – Missing from photo are winning team members Eoin Mac Phaidín, and Johnny Corr
Unfortunatley, there can be only one outright winner. There was a second presentation on the night – the not so coveted Wooden Spoon which on this occasion was presented by Enda Kinsella (Senior Manager) to Paul Ryan and Darragh Keary. Missing from photo is Kevin Byrne.
Special thanks to all who helped the smooth running of the event. Ned Slattery was on hand to ensure all started on time, our photographers Miriam and Clíona gave up their time to take photos of the event. Our large group of referees and stewards are essential to the operation and we thank them for their assistance. The course designers, Joe Ryan and Dave Conway also deserve great credit for the way the course was put together and the overall smooth running of the event.
We now look forward to the business end of the championships and wish every success to our teams.
