Senior football league v Clontarf in St Anne’s Park on 16 March 2023

Ballyboden St Endas 3 – 13

Clontarf 1 – 8

This game was brought forward to Thursday, the eve of St Patrick’s Day, and was played under lights. Boden was first to score when Luke O’Donoghue fired over from distance after three minutes and was quickly followed by a Daire Sweeney converted free. However, the home team were soon back in the game when they goaled after a good move through the Boden defence which was finished to the net, giving Darragh Gogan no chance. Clontarf followed this with two quick points (1 free). Daire Sweeney converted another free and then Boden were awarded a penalty which resulted in a point after Warren Egan kicked the ball over the bar. Clontarf scored another point but Boden responded with three points by Ciarán O’Reilly and Daire Sweeney (1 free) to go one point ahead. While Clontarf went ahead again after scoring two points, Boden went in at half time one point ahead when Kieran Kennedy and Ciarán O’Reilly popped over two points in added time to leave the score 0 – 9 to 1 – 5.

Within two minutes of the restart, Boden pressure paid off when James Holland was fouled in the square and the referee awarded the visitors another penalty. This time, Daire Sweeney took responsibility and, while his effort was saved by the Clontarf goalie, Daire followed up to finish the rebound to the net. Clontarf got a point back but, when one of their team was shown a black card, they were down to 14 players for the following 10 minutes. Boden took full advantage of the extra man and went on to score two goals and three points in the next 15 minutes, Mikey Dunne and Warren Egan with a goal and a point each and Daire Sweeney with a point from play. While Clontarf managed just two more points in the second half, Darren O’Reilly completed the scoring with a fisted point in added time.
