Senior football championship v Lucan Sarsfields, Monastery Road, 25 April 2019.
This was the second game in the round robin championship series. The team would be looking for a better performance after a sluggish performance against Clontarf in the first round. Lucan opened the scoring with a point in the first minute. Ryan Basquel responded with a good point from play followed quickly by another from Alan Flood. Lucan levelled again before Ryan Basquel added two more points, one with his fist. Although Boden were dominating possession, the free account was 10 to 1 against in the first 12 minutes. Lucan scored two points from frees each side of a Darren O’Reilly point. The next three points were scored by Boden through Michael Darragh Macauley, Darren O’Reilly and Warren Egan to put four points between the sides with 20 minutes gone. Lucan got a point back which was cancelled out by a free from Ryan Basquel after a foul on Warren Egan who had been put through by a good pass from Sean Gibbons. Lucan finished the half strongly with two more points to leave just two points between the sides as the half time whistle sounded.
The rain came down heavily as the second half started but it did not dampen Boden’s enthusiasm. Within five minutes four points were scored by Warren Egan (2), Ryan Basquel (free) and Ross McGarry. Boden’s dominance continued with tight marking and turn-overs at the back, midfield in control of their area and the forwards doing their jobs with the large amount of possession they were getting. Ryan Basquel popped over two more points to put 8 points between the sides. Lucan had not given up and were unlucky not to score a goal as the ball came back off the cross bar and soon after they popped over a point. Ross McGarry and Ryan Basquel added two more points. Lucan were awarded a penalty although it was clear to everyone, except referee Tony Lambe, that the foul happened at least two yards outside the square. However, Darragh Gogan was equal to the challenge and dived to his left to make a great save. He was in action again shortly after with another great save but following frantic action in the goalmouth area, Lucan finished the ball to the net. Tom Hayes, who had replaced Darren O’Reilly, restored Boden’s advantage with a goal and a point. Lucan got a point back but Ross McGarry cancelled this out to leave Boden with a ten point win.
