Disappointed members of the U13B team reflect on what might have been

U13 Division 3 Cup final

Ballyboden St. Endas B 2-8 v Fingallians 6-9

A day of extreme mixed emotions for the under 13 B Girls team.  The county final was played in Scoil Ui Chonaill GAA Club on the Clontarf Road.  The day got ever brighter after heavy morning rain.

A slow start saw Boden concede an early goal, but responded well with a fine long range point from centre back Sorcha Kennedy.   Fingallians responded again and re-established their goal lead.  But a great goal from Lucy Horan had Boden level mid-way through the first half.  Fingallians then got the upper hand a reeled off a string of fine points and a goal to lead by 6 with five minutes to go in the half.  But credit to the Boden girls they redoubled their efforts and a goal from Emily Moynihan and some good points from Ellie McAree and Alannah Grady had Boden trailing by a point at the break.  The girls kept their focus despite a long delay for an injury to corner back Sophie Weldon.

Half Time Boden 2-3 v Fingallians 2-4

At the start of the second half  Boden opened the scoring with a fine Aoife Quigley point.  We were on top at this stage but couldn’t get our noses out in front on the score board.  A rasping Ciara Duffy effort hit the bar and was bundled to the net but the score was disallowed for a square ball.  This may have proved crucial as Fingallians hit a purple patch of their own.  Their first two scores of the half were goals and that gave them a 6 point advantage.  Boden never gave up hope and responded with great points from Alannah Norris and Lucy Horan (3).  Fingallians were not to be denied despite some top class defending (which saw Elena McDonagh fracture a finger but  bravely play on till the end of the game). However a couple of late goals put the game away.  The final score did not do justice to the efforts of the girls.

Each girl gave a 100% effort and commitment and this was demonstrated despite having suffered an injury Sophie Weldon came back on to replace the injured Dearbhla McCarthy.

Final Score Boden 2-8 v Fingallians 6-9.

The mentors would like to sincerely thank the girls for their efforts throughout the year.  To reach a county final when always facing A teams is a tremendous achievement.  The girls should be very proud of themselves and though defeat was hard to take they conducted themselves impeccably.  They are a credit to their families and the club.

The mentors would also like to acknowledge the tremendous support that they received from the parents not only on the day but through-out the year.  This was evidenced by the thanks and handshakes exchanged posted match.

Despite the disappointment, all the girls returned to the club for some refreshments and to receive the runners up medals.
