BBSE (0-5) v Crokes (2-0) Cherryfield – 10/4/16

The old adage that “goals win matches” was never more amply demonstrated than in Cherryfield on Sunday morning, when a gallant display by our U-13A team was undone by the concession of two late goals to a committed Crokes team.

Conditions were tough in Cherryfield on Sunday morning with a heavy pitch and wind and rain but the camogie served up by the U-13 ladies of Boden and Kilmacud Crokes warmed the hearts of the spectators.

Boden took advantage of the gale first and had built up a deserved 4 point lead by half time. The lead could have been greater but for some missed goal chances, a disallowed goal and resolute defending from Crokes.

Coming down the home straight with 5 minutes to go, and 0-4 to 0-0 to the good, things were looking reasonably promising for us, but Crokes broke their duck and hit the net twice in that last 5 minutes, to pip us by a solitary point.

In truth, over the course of the entire game, we were the better team, even though some of our players were unavailable for a variety of reasons. In the end, however, an inability to make our possession count, and an over-reliance on the brilliant Jennifer for scores ultimately proved costly.

All is not doom and gloom however. There were some really solid performances from our girls, none more so than from our three u-12 girls playing up. Shauna, Clodagh and Alice slotted seamlessly into the team and none put a foot wrong all day. Auveen in goals made a few brilliant saves, and another who deserves special mention is Julie, who took the game to Crokes at every opportunity.

Thanks to the mentors and some parents who helped with the team and pitch preparation. We look forward to our next game away to Portmarnock next week-end.
