Templeogue Synge Street 1-5 Ballyboden St. Endas 0-15

A resolute Ballyboden St. Endas defence kept Templeogue Synge Street out in the second half to gain the victory in this AFL 1 match in Dolphin Park yesterday evening.
Ballyboden only scored four points in the second half but their defence was able to restrict the Synge Street forwards to only six scores in the entire match as their team ran out 1-5 to 0-15 winners.
The Templeogue coaching team will look at their team’s 13 wides as a missed opportunity and will surely be giving their team extra shooting practice during the week in the hope that this amount of missed shots won’t be racked up again.
The Templeogue men started the match brightly as Niall Scully and Tommy Coyne linked up well before Coyne took his first point. Synge Street dominated in the opening ten minutes as a Coyne free put them two points up. Three poor wides followed Coyne’s free and set the tone for Templeogue’s shooting mishaps. Coyne and Jake Swaine both missed the target when they really should have scored.
It seemed as if it wasn’t until after the first ten minutes that Ballyboden players decided to show up for the match. Ryan Basquel notched his first point of the day with his team’s first shot. This score was quickly followed by points from Ronan Cleary and Sam Moloney to put Boden into the lead.
Synge Street levelled through a point from corner forward Jake Swaine before GrassRootsGAA Star Man Ryan Basquel scored the point of the match. A Templeogue kickout was won with a great catch by Cleary who delivered a terrific outside of the foot pass into Basquel’s chest, the full forward then sold his man a dummy and pointed from long range.
Ballyboden hit their stride after that point as they notched four points without reply. Basquel slotted over a 45 before wing forward Colm Dunne put the ball over the bar after some great approach play. Cleary added to his tally shortly after and then Basquel scored his fourth point of the game.
They could have been further ahead if Cormac O’ Gara hadn’t have saved brilliantly from a Colm Dunne shot. The Templeogue goalkeeper dived sharply to his right to push the ball out for a 45 which was hit wide.
Synge Street quickly hit back through a Tommy Coyne point but their comeback hopes were dashed when Basquel was brought down when in on goal and a penalty was awarded. Basquel took the penalty himself but again, O’ Gara kept the ball out of the net with a great save. Basquel was the first to react to the rebound but his shot cannoned off the crossbar and the Synge Street defence cleared.
However, the penalty miss didn’t deter Basquel who scored three more points to put his team into an 0-11 to 0-4 lead at half time.
Templeogue came storming out of the blocks in the second half as they attacked the Ballyboden goal relentlessly. Their hard work paid off when Cillian O’ Gara scored a goal to bring them within four points of Ballyboden.
The second half, a turgid affair then fell into a routine in which Templeogue attacked and Boden defended. Templeogue had the majority of the possession but couldn’t convert it into any concrete chances against this strong Ballyboden defence.
One chance that they did create fell to substitute Fergal O’ Gara who took a shot at goal on the turn but could only find the side netting. Some poor shooting from the Synge Street team didn’t help their cause and Ballyboden stretched their lead through a Colm Dunne point, his second of the match.
Synge Street’s job was made even harder when Fergal O’ Gara. Basquel added to his tally with a free shortly after the sending off.
Substitute Kenny Naughton scored two late points to seal the game for Ballyboden who recorded their fourth win of the league campaign. Synge Street will travel to St. Pats of Donabate in the hope of securing a win to move them from the foot of the table.

Star Man
Ryan Basquel (Ballyboden St. Endas)
Basquel’s movement caused trouble for the Templeogue defence throughout the match as he picked up seven points.
