A hard fought victory in Drogheda yesterday saw our Senior Footballers progress to the semi-finals of the Leinster Championship. An uneventful first half  produced just 3 points apiece and a sending off for Boden’s Cathal Flaherty. The second half saw much better fare with the strength of the Boden bench making a telling contribution in the last quarter of the match.

Final score 1-11 to 0-05.

Thanks to Sean Gilheaney and Troy Gogan for the photos. Semi final details below.

Dublingaa report here.

Senior football v Newtown Blues, Leinster championship quarter final, Gaelic Park, Drogheda, 10 November 2019

Ballyboden St Endas 1 – 11  Newtown Blues 0 – 5

Both teams took time to settle and found it difficult to break down the defences. Newtown Blues were first to score after five minutes. It took the visitors another 7 minutes to cancel this out when Cathal Flaherty kicked a long-range score. The home team was next on the score board with a pointed free and this was cancelled out by Ryan Basquel after good work by Ross McGarry and Alan Flood. The Blues went ahead again from another free and this time Collie Basquel cancelled it out from a free, to leave the half time score at 0 – 3 each. However, the talking point at half time was the decision by the referee, just before the half time whistle, to show a straight red card to Cathal Flaherty. The second half would be difficult having to play with only 14 players. However, the feeling was that we were there before and survived.

The Blues were first to score in the second half after just three minutes, but Ross McGarry cancelled this out a minute later. On 12 minutes Ryan Basquel put the visitors ahead for the first time with a pointed free but the home team got back on level terms a few minutes later. This would be their last score. On 20 minutes Collie Basquel fisted over a point after good work by his colleagues to turn over possession. Two minutes later he put the winners two points ahead from a free. With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Conal Keaney was introduced and he made an immediate impact. Ryan Basquel was having some difficulty with his long range frees and when another long range free was awarded, Ryan passed to Conal who fired over. The visiting supporters were beginning to relax with three points between the sides. Then on comes Michael Darragh Macauley and he too had an immediate impact. As he carried the ball into the danger area he was tripped, and a penalty awarded. As we were now in added time, Ryan wisely popped the ball over the bar to put four points between the sides. Conal Keaney won the next kick out and popped the ball over the bar. Collie Basquel fisted another point and then after being fed by Michael Darragh, Collie, from a tight angle, chipped the ball over the goalie and into the net. Did he mean it? 100%. He told me so and I also saw him scoring a similar goal at training on the previous Friday evening!!!!!

It’s now on to Mullingar and a chance to get revenge on Garrycastle of Westmeath who ended Boden’s run in Leinster exactly 10 years ago.
