Division 1 Minor Ladies Football Championship
Monday 5th September, The 12th Lock
BBSE 1-12 Lucan 2-06
For one last time Boden minors came up against their old adversaries Lucan out at the 12th Lock on a rainy Monday evening. The girls in green have been the main rivals particularly for the ‘04 girls since they played their first matches as 9 year olds and they have always had keenly contested contests all the way through the juvenile age groups. After a first round defeat to Vincent’s, Lucan knew that defeat would probably see them out of the Championship. Boden had received a walkover in the previous match against Beann Eadair so they knew a win would see them advance to Semifinals.
Boden got the best possible start with Kate cutting through the defense and netting in the first minute. Boden then built up a lead with 3 more points without reply and all looked good. But as always in matches against Lucan, it wasn’t to be one way traffic. Points were exchanged on both sides and then with the last kick of the half, Lucan netted to reduce the gap to 3 points at the interval. With a strong wind and rainy conditions the match became a little scrappy in the 2nd half. Sarah scored a neat point to widen the gap but then when Lucan netted for the second time the gap was down to a single point. Boden rallied and with frees from Kate and Shauna, the gap was 4 into the last few minutes. One more point from Lucan made it a nervous last minute with some backs to the wall defending from Boden and there was relief to hear the final whistle.
Ballyboden and St Vincents now move on to the group stage semi final with next week’s match determining who out of these two teams tops the group.
As for Lucan, the girls will have lots of memories of battles past and will look forward no doubt to future encounters in the Senior ranks!
