Go-Ahead Ireland Senior 1 Hurling Championship, Round 2, 26th July 2025
Venue: Parnell Park
BBSE 0 21 Lucan Sarsfields 2 19
Bhí an dá chúl thapa a fuair Lucan ag tús gach leath cinniúnach maidir leis an toradh ag an deireadh. Lucan Sarsfields were the opponents for BBSE’s Senior 1 Championship second round, with experienced referee Sean Stack overseeing the match at Dublin GAA headquarters in near-perfect conditions. Hiney stuck with the starting 15 who secured a comprehensive win over Barróg in last weekend’s opener.
Boden wing forward Madden opened the scoring in the second minute. The move began with a long puck-out from McGarry, which was passed through McMorrow and Mulligan Lynch before reaching Gleeson, who offloaded to Madden to score. Lucan replied immediately when a long sideline cut into the Boden six-yard box was flicked on by Harkness and found its way to McGarry’s net. Murphy responded with a piece of skill, having been hooked on his left, he took a tap and converted on his right. Murphy added another score from his other side, with Flannery slotting Lucan’s first point in between (0:3 to 1:1, 5 mins). Flannery and N Ryan (two points) levelled the game by 10 minutes (0:6 to 1:3).
P Crummy and McCarthy added points for Lucan, who led 0:6 to 1:6 at 17 minutes. Dooley converted one of his characteristic long-range frees from 20 meters inside his own half after a tussle that saw Mulligan Lynch’s helmet come off and have to be replaced. Walsh replied with a long-range point for Lucan, with C Crummey tidying up with ease in a sweeper role. With just O’Connor to cover him, P Crummey was fed the ball inside and let fly, only for McGarry to produce a key save. N Ryan extended Boden’s tally following good work from Madden, which originated with a sideline from Durkin. After a clash, Maguire was fouled, and Lambert calmly converted (0:10 to 1:9, 24 mins). Play was stopped briefly for Madden’s treatment. McMorrow slotted a free after Gleeson was pulled down while racing at goal, bringing the half to a close with Boden trailing by the narrowest of margins 0:11 to 1:9 HT.
Boden trailed for the half despite Madden’s early score. Ste O’Connor and Fionn Murphy stood out for Boden in the opening quarter. Chris Crummey was influential for Lucan, acting as a sweeper and clearing the ball efficiently to the forwards. Bellow’s constant pressure made life difficult for McMorrow.
Decisively Lucan struck again shortly after the break, scoring a goal when Walsh intercepted a handpass 30 meters out (0:11 to 2:10, 33 mins). A short puck-out to O’Connor led to a well-worked Boden score involving Lambert, Murphy, and Ryan. Dunleavy’s impressive 40-meter run set up McMorrow to score from 45 meters (0:13 to 2:12, 36 mins). Boden’s centre half-back McGuire scored twice quickly, with Dooley key to both setups. Hammersley replaced Durkin at 45 minutes.
Lambert then undertook an 80-meter run, offloading to Hammersley who converted from the D (0:19 to 2:15, 51 mins). Boden’s half-backs produced their best spell, with long balls in to Hammersley, Murphy, Ryan, and Gleeson bringing the sides level (0:21 to 2:15, 55 mins), including McCleland pulling off a brilliant six-meter save from Gleeson. However, that was as close as Boden would get, a Crummey free found McCaffrey, who was left unmarked & duly converted from 45 meters. Delaney replaced Murphy at 59 minutes. Bolger and Walsh added a point each before Stack blew the final whistle with the FT score at 0:21 to 2:19 after 74 minutes.
As in the league, Hiney and his management team will feel this was a match that was there for the taking. In both instances, it was Lucan goals that made the difference, this time it was two quick Lucan goals at the start of each half. Plenty to reflect on during the three weeks before their next outing against All-Ireland club champions Na Fianna.
