Junior 1 All County Football Championship 04/08/2020.

Vs. Whitehall Colmcille. Venue: Sancta Maria.

Result: Ballyboden St. Endas 3.14 Whitehall Colmcille 1.11

The Junior A Football team continued their championship journey in a windswept Sancta Maria on Wednesday evening with Whitehall Colmcille providing the opposition. Both sides needed a win in order to keep interest in the championship which added to the atmosphere despite the Covid crowd restrictions which limited the attendance. Captain, Adam Farrell, won the toss and elected to play with the gale force wind blowing towards the Ballyroan end. Early points were exchanged with Aidan Garvey and Ciaran Cashman on target for the home side with Whitehall on target into the Templeroan end. Two well taken frees from Damien Kenny were again countered by Whitehall to leave the scores tied at the water break after 5 minutes.

The home defence were working hard to limit the space for Whitehall with the full back line of Barry O’Donnell, Michael Dunne and Joey Donohoe leading by example. A superbly converted 45 by Robert Cullen was followed by 3 further points by Ciaran Cashman, Dylan Walsh and Enda Cashman to leave the score at 8 points to 4 in favour of Boden when referee, Eamonn O’Dowd, blew the whistle for half time.

The half time team talk from Tony Duffy and Richie Connell focussed on working hard into the strengthening wind and the team got off to a very good start with points from Luke Basquel and John McGuire. Whitehall countered with some well taken points before a point from Ciaran Cashman was followed by John McGuire finishing a great passing move to the net for the first green flag of the evening. Luke Grady was causing problems for the Whitehall full back line and scored a well taken point. Further points and a goal from Whitehall narrowed the gap to 2 points before Aidan Garvey rounded the keeper and finished to the net for a well taken goal. A superb point blank save from Adam Farrell then denied Whitehall as the half back line of Dean Ralph, David Gilheaney and Conor Cullen worked tirelessly to limit space for the  Whitehall forwards. Kevin Cronin was introduced to bolster the defence and Larry Murphy made an immediate impact with a well taken point. A superb shot to the top corner of the net from Ciaran Cashman and a point from John McGuire finished the scoring to leave Boden in front on a scoreline of 3.14 to 1.11 as the final whistle sounded.

A very good display from the entire squad in difficult conditions for football. The final match in the group match will be at home v Na Fianna on Sunday 16th August with all to play for.
