Sunday 1 May

Sunday we drive to Cornamona via Leenane and Aasleagh Falls(for the scenery) and complete the walk of 3 hours on farmers lanes and ancient forest to Cong Village. This is a great walk with views of Corrib and passing the “ghostly” Ballykine Castle.  We convene at Cong Village for food and “de-briefing”.

We should finish at about 4.30.

I would hope that walkers would plan their own accomodation im Wesport TOWN and feed themselves as they go!!

Information on Walks

COOLIN LOUGH.

This is a 2 hour stroll around this beautiful lake and a visit to the abandoned village of Coolin.  Mount Gable frames the route and is famous in folklore as the meeting point for the Fir Bolg before an attack on the Tuatha de Dannan at Moytura close to Cong. This whole area is significant because the narrow isthmus between the Loughs Mask and Corrib was coveted by families such as the Joyce and O`Flaherty clans. The climb of the ridge is optional and takes 30 minutes.

LETTERMAGHERA LOOP.

This is one of 3 loops from 7 km upwards known as the “Burrishoole Loops”. The IRA commander Ernie O`Malley used these walking routes from his home at Burrishoole Lodge on the shores of Clew Bay in between his sailing trips with Louis Le Brocquy. O`Malleys book “On another man`s wound” was the basis for the film “The wind that shakes the barley”.  The views of Clew Bay,The Reek and Nephinbeg are fantastic.  Again another easy walk.

CORNAMONA TO CONG.

A stunning walk on farm lanes and ancient forest passing through Clonbur and Ballykine Castle to the grounds of Cong Abbey.  This walk has the “lot”, history, views, watering holes etc. About 3 hours.

Hope this whets the appetite!!

Regards

Conor
