AHL1 – BBSE 3:20 Cuala 1:19 – Saturday 29th March
Shane Ormsby Reports
Chabhraigh taispeántas iontach ó imreoirí óga Baile Buadáin Naomh Éanna bua maith a fháil. Cuala were the first visitors to PUM for this year’s AHL1 with the opening home fixture being an all Boden affair. An overcast but dry Saturday afternoon under the watchful eye of decorated réiteoir Seán Stack, the action got underway at 4:30. With the underfoot conditions perfect, thanks to Martin Durkin and grounds team, Boden started shooting into the clubhouse end, with the aid of the stiff breeze. The commitment to continue to develop young blood after a successful inaugural hurling rally was clear to see with 4 of last year’s minors making it into Hiney’s starting XV.

The younsters rewarded their manager early on with Ormsby recording Boden’s first two scores, the second an offload from Durkin who gloved a puck out from Adam O’Toole, Cuala’s net minder. A Cuala touch on the ground close to the 21 was punished by a Timmy Hammerley free providing Boden with a 4 points to 1 lead after 4 minutes. Darragh Delaney another of last year’s minors was in the right place at the right time to tap in a goal after a Pearce Christie attempt hit the post. Jack Lambert converted an outstanding point from his own 45. A lovely cross field pass from Durkin to allow Delaney to convert pushed the scoreline to 1:6 to 0:2 after only ten minutes. Some brilliant recovery work from Boden number 4 Luke ML allowed Ormsby get his third point of the game, a shot from the sideline on the 45. Cuala clocked their third point when Dalkey number 5 Ryan Malone converted from the 45. After a Hammersley free, Cuala’s Dave Ryan took a short free from his keeper, ran from his own 45 to convert Cuala’s fourth point. A long Mattie Nolan puck out aided by the wind straight to Christie gave Boden their second goal – 2:9 to 0:4.
The first period of concerted Cuala pressure followed with some outstanding defending from Boden’s Ryan, Dargan, O’Connor and Mulligan Lynch including the save of the match from Nolan to avoid a certain goal. At the other end Ormsby intercepted a puck out from the Cuala keeper on his own 45 to tap it over – 2:12 to 0:7, 28 mins in. Another interception from O’Connor, back to Nolan back out to Christie over to Keogh to take the penultimate final score of the first half. Boden looking good at half time BBSE 2:14 to 0:7, however playing into a swirling breeze, there was no way the job could be considered complete.
BBSE started the second half strongly, a well delivered ball along the carpark sideline from Davy to McMorrow and onto Hammersley for him to take his first point from play from 30 yards. A long run from Dooley, to Ryan resulted in an excellent goal from Hammersley – 3:15 to 10 points. Darragh Kenny came on for Timmy Hammersley at the 40 min mark and John Maguire for Davy on 44 mins. This was probably Cuala’s best period of the game clocking up 3 points without reply, the damage could have been greater only for plenty of wides. An injury to Jack Lambert saw him being replaced by Daniel Glynn with Ormsby moving into midfield. With 25 minutes into the second half Kevin Byrne came in for Darragh Delaney – score 3:18 to 0:19. A super one-two between Dooley and Kenny saw Kenny convert to bring the score to 3:19 to 0:19 with a minute left on the clock. A consolation goal for Cuala’s Jake Malone just as the clock hit 60. Mattie Nolan required attention in the process with Fergal Ryan standing in goal after Nolan had to wait out the next period of play. Kenny secured Boden’s final point with the last puck of the game.
Hiney is likely to be happy. His side only went behind to Cuala’s first score and in truth the result never looked in doubt after a brilliant first half display. There was good cohesion between the experienced & new players and he got to see everyone with all the subs making an appearance.
Final Score – BBSE 3:20 Cuala 1:19.
