Adult Hurling Section Stage a Rally

Saturday 8th March marked the inaugural Hurlers Rally. Minor and Adult Hurlers gathered in the hall for a series of talks over the course of two hours. The purpose of the rally was to driver greater engagement between our minors and our adults in an effort to break down barriers; learn a nugget or two to bring to sporting, personal and professional life; and have some light-hearted fun.

Following some opening comments from John Kirwan (Section Chair) covering topics such as juvenile development, volunteering and leadership, Paul Ryan lead a panel discussion with three new entrants to adult hurling namely Darragh Durkin, Darragh Ormsby and Johnny Corr. Paul shared some entertaining anecdotes from his playing career and followed with a list of questions for the three lads who gave an exceptional account of themselves.

John Ryan held a short quiz and had some four balls and vouchers for those who had studied the various rolls of honour in the entrance hallway.

Stephen Hiney talked about challenges and expectations, as well as the high standard he set for himself as a player. When marking Henry Shefflin he commented that he really didn’t care who Henry was, other than to ensure he didn’t get more than two points away in a game. Stephen also described what makes great team and laid out his vision for the Senior A’s.

Naoise Maguire shared some perspectives on Values in sport and how critical it is to choose the right values which encapsulate what you want as a team. Naoise gave the example of Willie Mullins and his acronym “CANI” – Continuous and Neverending Improvement, very appropriate during Cheltenham week!

We also had John Lonergan (the former Governor of Mountjoy) who talked about building and sustaining high levels of resilience. John, who hails from Bansha and is a passionate hurling fan, gave some very interesting perspectives regarding the value of community and good relationships. He described how Mountjoy is a very sad place, full of people who made one bad decision which ultimately led them down the wrong path. Honesty on and off the field is so important to enabling a person to reach their full potential. John also warned of the danger of drugs and their ability to shatter lives; ruin families and destroy any opportunity for something better.

The meeting was closed out by Donagh O’Farrell, Club Chair, who highlighted how important it is for the club that we work hard as a section and continue to bring joy to our members, especially those who love the game hurling.

The two hours flew in and hopefully our attendees took away a nugget or two which can enable them to make better decisions for themselves and those they impact.
