Camogie News Tuesday 13th October 2015

Sunday morning saw our Senior Camogie side relinquish their title which they have proudly won for the last 5 years. A slow start proved their downfall, and despite great efforts in the second half they just came up short.

The B’s game didn’t go ahead, as Kilmacud Crokes and ourselves were both already through to the Final. They face off at 2.45pm on Sunday and the venue is St Peregrines, a short spin away. This will be an extremely tough test against Kilmacud Crokes first team so all support is welcome.

The C team had a 3rd successive win to top their group. This week they travelled to Round Towers and came away with another good win. They will have a home semi-final, probably on Sunday 25th.

As well as the B Final, this weekend also sees the U14A side in their Championship Final on Saturday, also at St Peregrines at 1.30pm on Saturday. They will once again face Lucan Sarsfields, who they defeated earlier in the year in the Feile Final.

The U16A’s also face Lucan Sarsfields in their Shield Final, venue and time yet to be confirmed.

Senior Championship semi-final Ballyboden St Endas 1-10  Lucan 3-7

On Sunday morning a close encounter was expected against a fine Lucan side, and we were not to be disappointed. With numerous changes throughout the year to the team which started last year’s Championship Final we knew that we would be up against it. Another injury late in the week ruled out Su Kennedy, which meant 7 of the 2014 Final’s starting team didn’t start this game, a tall order to say the least.

A slow start was the last thing we needed, but Lucan began strongly and we struggled to get into the game. Lucan were winning most battles around the pitch, and the concession of 2 goals didn’t help our cause. As the half wore on Boden began to get into the game, but with a half-time deficit of 6 points it was obvious that we needed a quick start to the second half.

A couple of early scores in the second half got the home crowd going, but then Lucan struck for a 3rd goal to put them in command. At this stage we were 8 points behind, and it seemed the writing was on the wall.

A quick response resulting in a penalty converted by Ann Griffin got Boden back in the game, and the crowd responded. Laura Nagle put over a fine point, soon to be followed by a long range point from Máiread Luttrell to leave a goal between the sides entering the last 5 minutes. At this stage it was constant Boden pressure and Lucan had pulled back some extra defenders to try to get them over the line.

Laura Nagle was terribly unlucky to hit the post, and a couple of other goal opportunities went by before the final whistle blew to jubilant roars from the Lucan contingent. While the 2nd half left so much to be admired from the Boden girls, unfortunately they had let themselves too much work to do and just came up short on this occasion.

They went down fighting to the end as all great Champions do, and Lucan were congratulated on their victory and advance to their 1st Senior Final.

These girls have given us many memorable days out over the last few years, and we have no doubt that they will come back stronger next year.

Many thanks again to the terrific management team of Richie Sweetnam, Peter Lucey, Nuala O’ Sullivan & Bernard Curtis for their efforts throughout the year.

As big Arnie said: ‘WE’LL BE BACK!!’
