All of our adult teams were in action over the weekend and, we’re delighted to report, all four took full points from their respective league encounters and 3 of those games were away from home too! Injuries and holidays meant co-operation between the panels was crucial and it was good to see some of the minors step up to the plate when needed. The Seniors overcame Syls away in Malahide to get back to winning ways in a closely contested game while the Inters fielded a young team against Lucan scoring 21 points into the bargain! The Junior A’s also travelled to Malahide and thanks to 1-03 from Cian Bates returned with the points. Lastly (but not leastly) the Junior B’s continued their winning run with an emphatic win over Binn Eadair in Ballycullen.

Reports on all matches below.

Senior vs St. Sylvester’s
Saturday, 4th July 2015
Result: 1-12 to 1-10

On a lovely Saturday sunny evening in Malahide the senior footballers got back to winning ways. Playing against a strong wind in the first half, Ballyboden got off to a good start with two early points by Darren O’Reilly and corner back Shane Clayton. Sylvesters fought back with three in a row to leave us a point behind. Ryan Basquel converted a free and then up pops the other corner back Bob Dwan at the end of a good move to finish into the net. Darragh Nelson suffered a shoulder injury half way through the first half and was replaced by Daniel Davey. Points by Collie Basquel, who was now operating around the middle of the field, Aran Waters, Andrew Kerin (free) and Daniel Davey left us four points up going into injury time. However, Sylvesters were in no mood to surrender and scored a goal and a point in injury time to leave the scores at 1 – 7 each at half time. Not a bad position for us to be in with the wind in our backs for the second half!!

However, the wind does not win matches for anyone and it looked as if it would not do it for us either. Sylvesters started off the second half with two quick points in two minutes. A Ryan Basquel free brought it back to a point behind before Syls scored another point on 12 minutes which proved to be their last score. In one of his forays forward, Robbie McDaid suffered an injury to his ankle and was replaced by Sean Prendergast. A further free by Ryan Basquel and a point from play by Sam Molony brought us level again with about 10 minutes left. Tackling was hard, tempers were sometimes frayed and scores were hard to come by. Constant pressure on the Sylvesters back line yielded another free from the right hand side for the left footed Ryan Basquel to put us one point ahead.

Sylvesters kept coming but their final passes were being intercepted by our hard working backs, ably assisted by our midfield and forwards who were tracking back to good effect. Another break forward got the ball to Ryan Basquel who scored a great point from distance to put us two points up with about two minutes of normal time left. The referee announced that there would be four minutes of additional time. Sylvesters were now going for a goal. A great tackle by Darragh Gogan as the ball was being passed across the goal mouth saw the ball hopping towards the empty goal, only to be picked up and cleared by Bob Dwan. The goal mouth continued to be bombarded by Sylvesters and a high catch in the small square by Stephen Hiney brought further relief with another clearance. Shortly thereafter, the final whistle was greeted by huge relief and two league points safely in the bag.

Team: Darragh Gogan, Bob Dwan, Robbie McDaid, Shane Clayton, Stephen O’Connor, Stephan Hiney, Tom Hanafin, Darragh Nelson, Aron Waters, Darren O’Reilly, Ryan Basquel, Conor McCormack, Collie Basquel, Sam Molony, Andrew Kerin. Subs used: Daniel Davey for Darragh Nelson and Sean Prendergast for Robbie McDaid. Subs not used: Collie Dunne, Conor Deane and Warren Egan.

Intermediate vs Lucan Sarsfields
Saturday, 4th July 2015
Result: 0-21 to 1-10

The Inter footballers had a very important win v Lucan on Saturday. With lots of players missing with injuries and holidays 2 points in this game could prove vital in their push for The league. With all outfield players under 25 and 7 starters under 21 this team played with pace and skill that caused there opponents huge problems.
A man of the match display by the oldest of the bunch at 25 Ciaran Archibald in midfield drove the rest on. In the backs some very strong games by Brian Burns, Conor Dean and Scott Cullen. However it was the performance of the forwards that was the difference on the day with some great scores and link up play by Sean O’Shea, Seamus Keane and the Dunne brothers Colly and Mikey. A brilliant display of movement and skill by the younger of the brothers Mikey was a delight to watch. 21 scores, some cracking points from Archibald, Dunne and O’Shea gave the team a important win that keeps them on track for the league.
Big thanks to the management teams we had to borrow some players from and all the lads who came in played an important part. Good co-operation between teams and positive attitudes will prove successful as this weekend shows with 4 wins from 4 by all the adult football teams.

Junior A vs St. Sylvester’s
Sunday, 5th July 2015
Result: 2-10 to 2-07

Our Junior A footballers had a crucial win away to Sylvesters in Broomfield. A downpour before the game made conditions difficult however both teams settled well with Dave Gilheaney getting Boden on the scoreboard with a well taken point. Sylvesters scored the next 3 points and were dominating the breaking ball at midfield until an opportunist goal by Bodens Rory Jordan after a bad goalkeeping error. It was always going to be nip and tuck between the sides in the second half. The difference was two long distance points from Colm Sweeney and an excellent 1-3 from play from Cian Bates. His goal was a trademark ‘ Batesy’ finish, cutting in from the left and looping a shot over the Syls goalkeeper. Sylvesters hit back with a goal of their own but another fine point from Dave Gilheaney ensured Boden took full points from the game.

Junior B vs Beann Eadair
Sunday, 5th July 2015
Result: 3-13 to 0-06

Despite yet another delay, this game proved to be a cracker! Conditions were perfect and our Captain Colm Reade chose to play with the slightest of breezes. Bodens fitness levels were on show yet again with Niall O’ Connor and Keith McCarron dominating midfield. The ball was fed into the forward line and there was Dave McCabe to split the posts. But Boden didnt rest on their laurels. Young McCarron won their kickout and punished in the best possible way, neatly slamming the ball into the back of the Binns net! Dean O’Donnell was at his industrious best at wing back, playing off the midfield and supplying plenty of ball to the forward line. Mikey”fox in the box” Ryan was excellent at holding the ball up for the advancing half forward line allowing Colm Humphries to slot over two more points. Liam”brickwall” McNamara was solid in defence ably assisted by young Manning and the ever cool Rosco Bosco. By the half time whistle Boden were well in command after “the flyer” Bradser, McCarron and Niall O’Connor put us in front by 2-9 to 0-1. The second half saw McCarron working hard for his team mates. Boden were poetry in motion, a joy to watch! Young Donal McCarthy worked tirelessly out on the wing, showing dogged determination in the tackle. Substitutes were made and fitted effortlessly into the flow of the game. At half time Colm Reade urged his team to kill the game off and that is exactly what happened. Scores from McCarron and O’Connor sealed the game. But the final act went to Dean O’Donnell. Obviously getting ideas above his station, he collected the ball way out wide, cut in past one defender, past another and rifled the ball into the back of the net. Game over. BBSE 3-13 Beann Eadair 0-6. After beating Trinity Gaels in the league on Thursday 5-13 to 3-5 the J9s are creeping nicely up the table .With Paul Naughton in excellent form between the posts, this team is in safe hands! BODEN ABU!!
