Heartbreak at the end as our Minor B team lost by a point in the Minor C Championship Final in Colonshaugh on Sunday morning. In front of a big travelling Boden support an early free from Ciaran Cashman put Boden ahead against a fairly strong and chilly breeze. With Ciaran McDonell, Ruairi Mac Mathúna, Daire Lynch and Alex Craven defending well and Adam Farrell mopping up anything in his area Craobh Chiarain were finding scores hard to come by. There was some fine intercepts, tackling and good play in around midfield as Enda Cashman, Callum Gray, Aidan Garvey, David Ward and Dillon Dunleavey battled hard . Malachy Codd scored a point and Boden were 0-2 to the good. Craobh Chiarain got their first point of the match and both sides had chances but were narrowly wide. Despite some great defending from both sides Craobh Chiarain finished the half with a number of scores and a tight game went to the break with the score Boden 0-2 Craobh Chiarain 0-4 .Second half started and Craobh Chiarain went a point further ahead. Two scores from Ciaran Cashman and one from Malachy Codd leveled the match at 0-5 each in what was a more open second half.Up front Conor Woods, Conor O’Donoghue and Shane Garvey were winning some great possession. Points were traded with Ben Kelly getting his name on the scoreboard and Malachy Codd getting another to leave it tied at 0-7 a piece.
Then Craobh Chiarain scored a goal. It was frantic and Bodens heads didn’t go down. They battled hard and three wonderful points from Malachy Codd leveled it up again with Craobh Chiarain on 1-7 and Boden on 0-10. It was turning into some match. Craobh Chiarain added another goal before Ciaran Cashman pulled another point back. Craobh Chiarain extended the lead out to three points as Boden went all out attack.
Both teams were putting a huge effort in and Codd fired just over to make the gap two points with a minute or two left. Boden piled on the pressure and after a patient build up Enda Cashman fired a rocket toward the Craobh Chiarain goal which the goalie managed to put over the bar. A one point game. The kickout came and was won by Craobh Chiarain …. The ref blew the final whistle and Boden had been beaten by a point.
A great display by the lads who were unlucky not to at least bring the game to extra time.
