Junior C Championship Group 1

Ballyboden St Enda’s 1-21     Wild Geese 0-11

“Oldtown Goose well and Truly Cooked”

Ballyboden avenged last season’s heavy defeat by the same opposition at Sancta Maria last Sunday morning.  When the sides met in last year’s championship opener the men from far, far away land earned a comprehensive 13-point victory.

Wild Geese opened the scoring in the first minute with a well taken point but almost immediately Ciarán Twomey replied to restore parity.  From this point onwards Boden outplayed and outfought their opponents and by half time the Oldtown goose was well and truly cooked.  By the first water break Ballyboden had opened up a healthy 1-6 to 0-3 lead with the goal coming from wing forward Brian Cummins on the cusp of the break.  The next quarter was a harrowing one for the visitors as they failed to score while the hosts fired over 6 points mainly through the accuracy of Gareth Crowley from frees.  Half backs Rian Cannon and Liam Duffy also joined in on the scorefest as they fired over 2 fine long range efforts in the 26th and 27th minutes respectively.

The second half was a much more competitive affair but the men from North County Dublin could not make any inroads on that sizeable half time lead.  The pace of Bodens play dipped in this half, understandably as they had put in a mighty effort in that first half in quite humid conditions.  The hosts shooting was also off target on occasion as the intensity slowly disappeared from the tie.

Ballyboden now go on to the second round group game in 2 weeks’ time in confident mood that they can put themselves in a position to qualify for the quarter finals.
