Under 14 Girls  Trip to Leitrim

The weather was kind to us as we set off from Firhouse Road to lovely Leitrim last Friday afternoon and there is still some debate as to who was the most excited in our merry band, between the 26 Boden U14 B & C girls and 2 visiting French students, the 5 mentors and the 5 Bean an Ti’s but it was probably a tossup between Brendan (Cute) Coyne and Anne (The Jiver) McCormack.

We arrived safely and after settling into our houses in Drumcoura City, which is situated 4 miles east of Ballinamore, we headed to dinner at 8pm in the Saloon and after which the extremely shy Lisa Basquel and equally shy Rachel Hall serenaded us on Karaoke. The girls played pool and sang (very loudly). Mams and Dads played darts tournaments which were won by Cliona (Double Top) Mellett and Mick (Can’t see the board) McDonald. And a great evening was had by all.
Bed was at 11pm- ish so the girls could get a good night’s sleep for the 2 matches we had organised for the next day. We are not sure if the girls got any sleep at all, not to mention Roseann Basquel and Adrienne Doyle Flaherty who were up all night from what we heard (only saying!)Breakfast was at 10am, again in the Saloon, where we all ate together all weekend which was great fun and then we set off  in the dense Leitrim fog for Ballinamore.
Aughawillan was first up at 12.30pm. We not sure what happened to our girls but reckon they were still asleep and by the time they woke up, they were well behind however they rallied to lose out narrowly to the home side.  Many thanks to Aughawillan for a wonderful sporting game, a credit to the fine people of Leitrim. The Boden girls of Clare Kearney, Sheena Morris, Hannah Bolger, Grace Doyle Flaherty and especially Sarah McGrath in goals had fine games. So it would seem that some girls must have gone to bed early!   A Ballyboden jersey signed by Boden and Dublin Footballers Michael Darragh Macauley, Darragh Nelson and Declan O’Mahony was presented to the club. Many thanks to the lads for signing the same.

Next up was Sean O’Heslins of Ballinamore at 2pm. This was another fine game of football, nip and tuck all the way with a draw the fairest result for all. Ballinamore had a couple off 11 year olds playing so the future is bright for Leitrim ladies football with these kids around. Our girls battled and we saw some superb displays by both Grace Campbells (yes we have 2) and Niamh McCormack in goals, Katie Coyne and especially Emily (Two Goal) O’Gorman…. she’s getting good at scoring goals that one! A second jersey signed by the 3 boys was presented to Ballinamore.

The host clubs kindly invited us into the Ballinamore clubhouse for tea and cake, where the girls mixed and chatted about the disco we had organised for that evening.

Back to Drumcoura for a fantastic Western riding display by Ron Wiesz, a friend of Stephen Campbell’s, who organised the weekend with Colm Bolger…you gotta see this show folks and every girl got a spin on the horses including a few Moms and Dads.

Dinner and Disco time then and we can’t say too much about the disco but if the girls can play football as well as they can dance, things are looking well for the future of  Ballyboden Ladies.

Sunday morning was a quiet affair and after a sedate breakfast, we set off for home to arrive back at the clubhouse in the early afternoon. There wasn’t a sound in the cars on the homeward journey.

A special thanks to Cliona for the superb photography. We can’t wait for the slide show on the night we have planned for our end of year party

The Ballyboden girls and guests were very well behaved and a credit to the Club and their parents. Well done girls. The weekend was such a success that we may even go back next year. I know the Leitrim girls have made friends and sure isn’t that what it’s all about. Well done everybody.
Finally a big thank you to the parents who travelled. We could not do this without you guys…Adrienne Doyle Flaherty, Cliona Mellett, Ann McCormack, Margaret McGrath, Roseann Basquel, Willie Kearney and the 4 mentors Brendan Coyne, Mick McDonald, Colm Bolger and Stephen Campbell.Ps: Poor Jenny McMyler was unfortunate to get sick on Thursday and was unable to travel Don’t worry Jen we will get you next time!
