Le Fear Bog Reports from PUM

I’m sure the St Vincent’s players and mentors had a good look at the banner outside PUM on Sunday declaring Ballyboden St Endas as Dublin, Leinster and All Ireland champions.  These were once their titles not so long ago.  However, this match was a different code, different age category but the intention was still the same – win and send out a statement.

In a match of great intensity and no little skill Ballyboden St Endas came out on top by 4 points.  A fast start was called for and Rob Donoghue duly obliged with a majestic point in the very first minute.  From there to the interval both teams traded scores and Boden went in to the sos 2-7 to 2-4 ahead.  The highlight of the first half was an Eoghan Monahan point midway through when he pulled the sliothar out of the sky turned and sent it sailing over the crossbar from 40m out.  A thing of beauty.  Aaron Coffey kept Boden’s noses in front with his free taking and he was ably assisted by Shane Kennedy and the aforementioned Monahan.

James Holland on the move

James Holland, fresh from his exploits with the Dublin minor footballers, was introduced at half time and his powerhouse, physical display from right half back in the second half helped the Boden lads over the winning line.  A goal from Eoghan Monahan 10 minutes into the second half helped to stretch the lead to 5 points but a dogged St Vincent’s side hung on.  It was at this juncture that the determination and sheer stubbornness of the 2 Karls, Reddy and Weldon, came to the fore and they built a wall in defence that the Vincent’s boys could not surpass.  A goal from the Northsiders with 10 minutes left had the tie in the balance until Conor Fallon stepped forward with a game changing major with 5 minutes left.

Karl Weddon bursts out

Boden now top their group along with Na Fianna with a maximum of 8 points from 4 games.  However, this is a marathon league with 14 games in total so there is a long way to go yet – a fact emphasised by manager, Seamie O’Neill, after the game.
