Senior A match report: Boden v’s Kilmacud Crokes 04/09/24
If there was ever a doubt that the Dublin senior ladies football championship is the most competitive championship in the country, you only had to witness this encounter last Wednesday between ourselves and Leinster champions Kilmacud Crokes to be convinced.
It was played at a ferocious pace from start to finish with the game including lots of current or former inter county stars from Dublin, Galway, Cork and Donegal.
Ballyboden started the game brightly, getting the opening two points from the boot of Rebecca McDonnell. Kilmacud replied with the next 3 scores to lead by a point. In the tenth minute, McDonnell found the top corner of the net with a wonderful goal to have the home side lead by 2 points. However Kilmacud seemed to pick off scores easier than us over the next ten mins with Niamh Cotter, the former Cork star, helping greatly with her free kicks.
In the 26th minute, Boden had a great chance of a three pointer but Rebecca McDonnell’s effort was snuffed out by the Kilmacud defense.
Half-time;Ballyboden 1.3 Kilmacud 0.9
Boden reduced the deficit to 2 points within a minute of the second half through a McDonnell free but a well worked score from wingback Kate Murray left the visitors 3 points clear. Unfortunately, over the next 15 mins, Boden were unable to get any closer with Kilmacud’s greater experience coming to the fore. Our defence was outstanding throughout, leaving Kilmacud no clear goal chances with Sadie Codd, Aoife O’Brien, Megan Dignam and Alice Rudden being particularly prominent.
Hannah Murphy was a tireless worker around the middle, whilst our attackers, while giving everything, found scores hard to come though Boden were the only ones to register a goal during the whole match.
Final score; Ballyboden 1.5 Kilmacud 0.13
It now comes down to our final game next Wednesday V Thomas Davis (away) @ 6.30 to see who qualifies for the semifinal with the winner takes all.
Many thanks to John Kirwan and Cliona Mellett for the wonderful photos. See photos here
