Last Thursday evening April 7th, the Senior B Camogie team made the trip across the city for a 6.45pm throw in for the first League game of the season. The early time made it difficult to get a team together, but we just managed to get 15 players.
The pitch was a small juvenile one, which made this a physical encounter from the first whistle. Some early scores by Boden gave us an early 5 point lead, including fine points by Claire Kirwan and Emer O’ Leary. However Finbarrs got stronger as the half progressed and at half time we had a lead of 4 points.
Finbarrs started the second half well, and got a number of fine points. At this stage Boden were struggling for scores from play, but Darina Ryan was extremely accurate from placed balls and kept the scoreboard ticking over. A deflected goal by Finbarrs left a point between the teams entering the last 10 minutes, before a long range free by Darina was deflected into the net to give us some breathing space. Another late goal by Claire Kirwan put a gloss on the scoreline.
The Boden defence performed well throughout and when under pressure in the second half got a number of crucial blocks and interceptions. In attack we have room for improvement and need to be more clinical. A late injury to Eimear Butler looked a nasty one, but at this stage doesn’t appear to be a serious one.
All in all, happy enough to get the win but some tougher assignments await. Thomas Davis at home on Pairc Ui Murchu on Thursday is our next game.
