Result: 1-19 to 2-17

Senior football league v Lucan, 6 July 2018, 12th Lock.

When a football team scores 1 – 19 in a game, the only question that comes to mind is, what did it win by? However, against Lucan on Wednesday Ballyboden lost this game by one point. Some slack defending allowed the home team to score an equally impressive score of 2 – 17 and thereby win by one point. The game started with four scores in the first four minutes – Ryan Basquel (free) and Collie Dunne had their points cancelled by Lucan. Alan Flood and Ryan Basquel, both from play had the visitors in front again before Lucan got their next point. Ryan Basquel was then centrally involved again when he set up Ross McGarry for a well taken goal. Ross had replaced Declan O’Mahony after 10 minutes as he had to retire due to injury. Lucan brought the margin back to a goal before Ross McGarry and Ryan Basquel added points for Boden. The remainder of the half saw Sam Molony, Ross McGarry and Collie Dunne pop over points from play with Lucan scoring four points (3 frees) to leave the half time score at 1 – 9 to 0 – 8.

Lucan were quickly out of the traps in the second half with two points in the first minute or so. The four-point margin was restored by Ross McGarry and Ryan Basquel (free) before Lucan got in for their first goal with barely five minutes of the second half gone. They followed this quickly with a point to bring the scores level. Ryan, again from a free, restored the visitor’s lead but Lucan struck with another goal and two points within a couple of minutes. Ryan Basquel had another pointed free in between these scores to leave Lucan a goal ahead. Boden showed good resilience to regain the lead by scoring the next four points, three by Ryan Basquel (one free) and one from play by Ross McGarry. Lucan regained the lead by scoring the next two points from frees. Darragh Nelson brought the sides level again with a point but the home side was not going to give up easily and scored the next two points from play to put themselves in pole position with time running out. Barra McGarry managed to bring the reduce the deficit to the minimum but Lucan managed to run down the clock and gain two valuable league points.
