Senior football league v St Maurs in Rush, 12 May 2019
The old cliché that goals win matches proved true in Rush this morning when the visitors scored goals at crucial times in this match. Maurs had a whirl wind start with three points from play in the first three minutes. The first of Boden’s four goals then arrived two minutes later, courtesy of Ross McGarry, to bring the sides level against the run of play. The goal did not seem to faze Maurs as they tagged on another four points without reply and looked worthy of their lead with Boden guilty of sloppy passing and handling, with just 10 minutes gone. However, the next 10 minutes belonged to Boden and, in particular, to Warren Egan and Collie Basquel, on the score board. First, a goal attempt by Warren was deflected over the bar for a point and Collie pointed a free. Then, following a great run, Darren O’Reilly passed to Warren who finished to the net. Five minutes later Collie also finished to the net after a great run through the Maurs defence to put the visitors four points ahead. Maurs did not give up and scored two points (one free) before Collie Basquel pointed a free to leave three points between the sides at half time: 3 – 3 to 0 – 9.
Maurs started the second half with the same enthusiasm as they started the first and had two points on the board (one free) within two minutes. Ryan Basquel then came to the rescue with three points (2 frees) in the next five minutes to bring the lead to four points. Maurs got one point back but Ross McGarry and Collie Basquel extended the lead to five points. Ross could have extended this to 8 points but his shot for a goal hit the post and was cleared. The five-point lead was reduced to one in the next two minutes when Maurs scored a point and another effort for a point dropped just under the bar for a goal, with Darragh Gogan off his line. The pressure was again back on the visitors, with 15 minutes still left to play. However, the Boden team showed its maturity and prevented the home team from scoring again. Collie Basquel (free) and Ryan scored two points before Ryan finished to the net following great work by Tom Hayes who fed Collie and he in turn passed to Ryan who palmed to the net. Another great move by Tom Hayes fed Collie Basquel but his goal effort was cleared off the line with the goal-keeper beaten. With time running out, Ross McGarry knocked over two points in as many minutes followed by another from play by Ryan Basquel. In added time, Kieran Kennedy found himself at the end of a great team effort and fisted over the bar for the last score of the game.
