Ballyboden St. Endas 5 21 Faughs 1 11

Wordsworth reports from O’ Toole Park

Ballyboden Senior A hurlers’ lined out against Faughs in round three of this year’s championship a sunny, blustery and briefly, showery O’Toole Park on Saturday afternoon 19th August.

Both teams met earlier in the year with Boden in the League and a feature of that match was a very early goal for Faughs. This time, corner forward Niall McMorrow decided to return the compliment with a low shot to the net from the opening attack.  Faughs then settled and had the better of the exchanges for the following ten minutes. A brace of Paul Ryan frees steadied Boden and on the quarter hour, they had edged ahead following well taken points by midfielders Aidan Mellett and Niall Ryan. The next ten minutes saw scores exchanged but it was then that Boden moved up the gears. A blistering last six minutes saw Boden register 1-5 without reply, Pearce Christie and Dublin star James Madden adding their names to the scoreboard. A powerful goal from Conor Dooley just before the half-time whistle sent Boden to the dressing rooms in better mood. HT: Boden 2-10 Faughs 0-8.

Boden now had the slope and the wind to their advantage and they wasted no time in making those count. Early points from Timmy Hammersley and Shane Durkin were joined by the first of Pearce Christie’s two goals in this third quarter. Boden were winning key exchanges in midfield, including the turnover of Faughs puckouts. Stephen O’Connor added a fine point in this period as well as substitutes were introduced by both managers. Two of those subs, Kevin Desmond (goal) and Eoin Behan (point) made sure the pressure continued and despite a late goal for Faughs, ensured Boden ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of Boden 5-21 to Faughs 1-11. A break now for Boden until the final match against Na Fianna in Parnell Park in mid-September.
